scary stuff
Constantine's Sword looks pretty interesting. Word is, its documentation of contemporary US theocracy puts Jesus Camp in the shade.

Meanwhile, I'm starting to get the fear that's been prescribed to me.

at least we don't work on politically sensitive information, eh? "uh-oh, that guy is showing an unusual interest in Latin." :)

Well, actually, Arabic might be useful for some of my research. And of course virtually all of my interests are "unusual."

Yeah, they've been keeping tabs on Arabic for awhile. It does help make a rep as a Medieval philologist though, for sure, although I hear it's just a huge commitment (my advisor actually shied me -away- from it...but I have the excuse of a pre-Islamic period). I dunno, I find people are cool to me if I just peg all the weird stuff with the prefix "Christian." :)

Okay, I could understand a little bit of inquiry into "unreported contact with foreign government, military, or intelligence officials,"...well, not so much governments, in general. Otherwise, whoa.
But doesn't it fit the bill? We're at the clamp down on the "intelligencia" stage of the program.
I'm just stunned by the sweeping nature of the supposed of the suspicious activities. "Showing unusual interest in information outside the job scope?" "Unreported contacts with foreign nationals?" Like on the internet? What the hell does that mean? Does this include Mexican illegals in the dish pit of the pizza place? Tourists asking directions?
It just smacks of a fear of youth, especially with a new swing in college age kids toward the left, work by college kids such as "Loose Change", retrospect to the 60s and the fact that the CIA, NSA and FBI hire their own techies from these universities.
But then it all comes down to this. The KGB no longer exists. Just who are they worried about. The Chinese? North Korea? The Arabs? Oh, please! Maybe the US is just so alientated, our hopes of credibility so shot with every other nation on the planet, that everyone is now a potential enemy. I guess Kagan's work trying to get Europe to like us through impressing the rest of NATO that their fate still depends on US military superiority isn't going so well.
