Another day, another reason to be glad I don't carry a cell phone.

If you turn off all of the 'track me' options, or just turn the phone off, it doesn't work. Still creepy, though.

This post disagrees with you regarding turning the phone off. I'm no expert myself. But I don't doubt this claim for a minute:
There have even been cases where people have been disciplined/dismissed from jobs based on cell movement monitoring by their employer.

Yeah, I definitely don't think turning off the tracking does anything, because it still tracks you instantly if you dial 9-11, whether on or off, which means the cops know where youare or where the phone is.
Is the tracker in the phone or the chip?
Needless to say that a little hacking at the hideout, a quick coded text message and the cops are following an abandoned cell phone, (stashed in the well of a truck at a gas station,) into mexico, while the target is driving north, into the deserts of New Mexico.
Ah, but what of lap tops? Do laptops have GPS chips in them s these days?

Dunno. I don't have one of those either, which I guess makes me deficient as an academic.

hrm, somehow you've been linked in my mind with "keeps at least half an eye on the growing panopticon"... so, here's news of another brick in the invisible wall:
