I've heard many times that adversity brings out the best in people. During the Great Depression and the following War, people seemed to be more willing to pitch in to help each other and the country in general. Decades of prosperity have brought a reduction of social services and a shocking disparity between rich and poor. Now that things have soured, we have begun to see some of the write-offs and give-backs filter through the system, with tax breaks here, and price reductions there.
If Four Freedoms is set in a similar period of economic malaise, do you think it presents a critique of different ways we respond to this today? Does he paint 'ur-socialism' realistically, or is it simply a backdrop upon which to caricature human foibles?
